Duration: 60 Minutes

Biomedical Engineers use MSC Software Computational modelling and analysis solutions for simulating: Orthopaedic products, Medical fasteners, Knee replacement and Prosthetics amongst many others medical related solutions.

By optimizing design, biomedical engineers can reduce time to market and increase product reliability while meeting budgetary and regulatory requirements.

Mini-plates modelling for the osteosynthesis of bone fractures will be introduced in the webinar. The modelling skills, results evaluation and automatic simulation run in a batch mode will be presented and discussed.

Two mini-plates prototypes have been fabricated and tested overseas.

Benefits of utilizing FEA for medical design include:

  • Shorter development cycles
  • Reduced risk
  • Faster FDA and CE approval
  • Enhanced patent protection
  • Improved quality management
  • Increased performance and mechanical reliability
  • Increased product life and durability
  • Improved patient effectiveness

About Technology

The treatment of mandibular fractures is difficult, and the results are sometimes unpredictable due to factors like:

  • The complex biomechanics of the mandible which requires the implanted components to transfer across the fracture line the complete spectrum of loads to which the mandible is subjected during the mastication process.
  • The possible degradation of the bone during the healing process around the fasteners attaching the mini-plate and at the fracture lines.
  • Many other clinical factors influenced by age, gender, size, ethnicity, general health etc.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to setup fastener FEA model in biomechanics simulation
  • How to evaluate FEA simulation results
  • How to run multiple MSC Nastran FEA simulation in a batch mode
  • How to efficiently post-processing of results from thousands of files

Presenter

Mr. Claudiu Gudas, Structural Strength Analyst - C & D Gudas

Claudiu Gudas is a senior aerospace structural analyst with more than 25 years experience in advanced expertise in structural strength analysis analysis and in sizing of aircraft structures using a combination of Finite Element Analysis, classical methods and bespoke engineering procedures.

Claudiu commenced his work as an aerospace structural analyst in Europe (for the prototype for an agricultural bi-plane).  He conducted most of his FEA work for aerospace companies and government institutions in Australia and North America and for their subcontractors (eg. Hawker de Havilland - now Boeing Australia, Hawker Pacific - (now Jet Aviation), Lockheed Fort Worth during the development of the F-35 (fuselage) and Boeing Commercial Airplanes for the 777F (wing trailing edges) and the fuselages of 747-8).

During his professional activities he showed a particular interest in application of finite elements for the analysis and quantification of the strength for fastened joints and for the pragmatic quantification of the effects of the fastener loads on the fatigue strength of the structures.

Host

Mr. Tony Dong, Technical Manager at Hexagon Australia and MSC Software

Tony has worked in simulation industry for 25 years since his master research in tool design in forging process. He spent six and half years in R&D including FEA modelling with MSC Marc in Singapore to support local manufacturing industry.  He has been with MSC simulation technology for 16 years and delivered many services projects and trainings as well. His current role is about supplying MSC technology solutions to customers, supporting MSC customers in ANZ and working with universities closely to support their R&D.
