During vehicle assembly, automotive body painting and electrophoretic (e-coat) application is very complex and expensive. For example, multiple ovens spanning hundreds of feet are used for curing and can reach temperatures of more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Engineers and designers ensure that the heat is uniformly distributed during the curing process. Engineers must address many other challenges to ensure the coating and painting process is successful after the first iteration. Other challenges include ensuring surfaces are clean before coating and painting, avoiding gas bubbles and excess liquid, and optimizing dipping and draining. The list of challenges to address is extensive, but time and budget constraints limit engineers to a small number of physical prototypes. As a result, many challenges are not addressed early and are discovered late in the process.
