Wind energy is clean, sustainable and cost effective. Over the past 10 years, cumulative wind power capacity in the United States increased an average of 30% per year, and it is one of the lowest-priced renewable energy technologies available today.

Wind turbines are becoming ubiquitous, both in offshore and onshore conditions, and placed close to inhabited areas, thus causing annoyance, stress and sleep disturbance due to perceived noise. Wind turbine noise sources such as aerodynamic noise, mechanical noise from the various components as well as ground vibrations need to be mitigated in order to reduce or eliminate the negative health effects to the nearby residents.

Multiphysics simulation enables companies to perform noise studies on the component level (gearbox, blade) as well as the system level (complete wind turbine or wind farm), and optimize the wind turbine acoustics through the integration of CFD, structural and acoustic simulation.

Viswesh is a Senior Application Engineer with Free Field Technologies, part of Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence Division. Viswesh has a Master’s of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering with specialization on Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics from ISAE, Toulouse and has been working with Free Field technologies for the past 2.5 years, focusing on providing high-quality solutions to industrial noise problems with special focus towards tire noise and aeroacoustics.
